“Parliament has never stopped Nyege Nyege. Parliament gave its opinion on the festival,” said Hon Basalirwa while appearing on NBS TV’s Barometer program.
This seems quite a surprise especially owing to the fracas the August House caused in regards to the event. Parliament led by the Speaker, Anita Among, vowed that the Festival wasn’t going to take place.
In fact they did stop it not until the intervention of the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja.
Even after that, Hon Among said that they had given their orders and the Executive should stop interfering with the Legislature. These MPs stopped the event on grounds of breeding sexual immorality. It’s therefore a surprise to see them backtracking their words.
Basalirwa also addressed the assassination rumors on the Speaker. It should be noted that Hon Anita Among a few days ago made claims that her life was in danger.
She said that she’s being trailed severally by unknown cars and even received an assassination report about her which she shared with the leader of Opposition, Hon Mathias Mpuuga.
Basalirwa said that when a person makes such claims, he doesn’t take them lightly.
“If anyone comes out to say their life is in danger, I don’t take it lightly,” added Basalirwa.
This is a statement that was agreed with by veteran politician and opposition diehard, Lubega Mukaku.
However, the Microfinance minister Hon Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo said that security issues are not for the public realm. The Speaker therefore knows where exactly she has to take those concerns which is not the public.
