Pastor Martin Ssempa Trashes HIV Discrimination Case Against Him

Makerere Community Church lead Pastor, Martin Ssempa, has come out to trash the HIV discrimination and stigma case that he was sued for recently.

After a court session yesterday, the outspoken pastor said that he won’t be silenced by anyone with bogus charges. Ssempa added that he will use his voice and freedom of speech to teach what he deems right.

It should be recalled that the pastor was sued by CEHURD Uganda for his tweets they termed discriminative towards HIV-positive people.

CEHURD Uganda is thought to have plans of organizing beauty pageants to recognize people living with HIV. This is something Ssempa highly condemned because it doesn’t make sense to him.

He wonders why HIV is now being recognized and rewarded. Ssempa questions why other STDs are not rewarded too if this is the case.

The pastor said that there are other measures that can be used to address the HIV surge and create awareness other than glorifying it.

Ssempa’s lawyer also said that this case has no matter in it and is in fact very weak. However, a spokesperson from CEHURD Uganda said that they are bent on having Ssempa prosecuted.

This is because such comments from a man of his status were so wrong. They stated that there are actually people who were born with HIV and others who got it accidentally.

It’s therefore not right to deny them a platform to share their stories and impact others. Ssempa however is adamant to change or delete his tweets.

This is because he believes his message meant no harm. Besides he’s worked with people with HIV for over 30 years so he doesn’t see the problem with his message.
