Patient Dies As Medics Celebrate Colleagues Birthday

Two senior medical laboratory officers were found guilty of negligence following the death of a patient at Nanyuki hospital in Kenya. Ms. Halima Hassan, 58, died on Monday as the medical staff held a birthday party for one of their colleagues.

Halima’s husband together with their children rushed the patient to the hospital only for the medics to lock themselves in the laboratory.

Ms. Maitai, a Health Executive said her department has also written to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to investigate any criminal liability.

‘’In our opinion, there was a significant level of laxity and rudeness from our laboratory staff. This is not acceptable and cannot be condoned,’’ Ms. Maitai said.

She further said that they have overhauled the laboratory department as a result of the actions that happened on Monday. They found two health workers, Phydelis Wachie and Clement Kimani culpable and interdicted according to Maitai. Forensic investigations further into the case are still taking place.

The executive thanked the public and members of staff who brought the attention of the hospital management to this incident. Ms. Maitai noted that because of such reporting, the hospital has interdicted other staff members in the past.

The hospital interdicted Mr. Peter Fredrick, a community oral health officer, who regularly failed to show up at work. In the same efforts, the hospital interdicted Michael Makau, a radiographer at the hospital for extorting money from patients.
