Omondi Owera Calvince, who stays with his big brother, a boda boda rider, has been hustling to raise funds to be able to join Masinde Muliro University of Sciences and Technology in September this year by working in city construction sites.

The candidate of 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) from St Vincent Mixed Secondary School in Oyugis who scored C+ was admitted at Tom Mboya University College to pursue a Bachelor of Education (Arts, with IT).

I was unable to study the whole 2nd term in my form four busy looking for school fees by hustling as a casual labourer in Oyugis. When we reached 3rd term, the principal called and offered me a chance to complete my education simply because he said he keenly observed a University material in me,’he said.

This student was born in a poor family, where by his father was a watchman and his mother is a subsistence farmer, he quickly realized the kind of family he comes from and because he had the passion to study, he had to raise his secondary fees by working during holidays.

He is struggling to meet a life time opportunity to become the first person in his family to join University. His big brothers are secondary school drop-outs and his younger brother and sister are still in primary school.

The yet to be University student said he has applied for job opportunities in many places, but in vain and he finally resorted to working as a casual laborer on construction sites to be able to raise money.
