An ongoing clinical trial of 30,000 volunteers is expected to conclude by the end of 2020. However, there’s an independent board with the authority to end these trials early if results are overwhelmingly positive or negative.
‘’The data is so good right now that you can say it is safe and effective,’’ Fauci said.
In that case, researchers would morally be obligated to end the trial early and avail the active vaccine to everyone.
The delay in availing a vaccine brought public concern shaking their confidence in the vaccine. The public wondered whether Trump’s administration could influence the parties overseeing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fauci’s comments however, came in to calm the tides that were forming amongst the public. He said making a decision about the vaccine should be backed up by good evidence that it is safe and effective. Also that he cared less about political pressure.
He said he expects the DSMB to hold vaccines to a high standard since it is a non-government institution. It would therefore avoid political influence hence zero pressure in producing a vaccine.
Manufacturers are now testing three different COVID-19 vaccines on large scale trials in the US. Each of these studies was designed to enroll 30,000 participants.
