Donald Trump arrived at the final debate of the 2020 campaign seized by an issue that was never really discussed. One of the hallmarks of the Trump era is his penchant for pushing characters peddling dubious stories into the center ring of the US political circus.
Trump has been an effective ringmaster in the past. Straight from retweeting conspiracy theorists to putting fringe GOP operatives banished from presidential politics on the payroll.
The Tony Bobulinski Scandal
He worked overtime to do that again on Thursday but it didn’t go so well before or during the debate. The Trump campaign organized a press conference earlier on Thursday and Tony Bobulinski, a former Hunter Biden partner attended. Bobulinski stood up and alleged that Joe Biden knew details about the enterprise.
Trump once displayed piles of manila folders with papers and said they were documents proving he gave his children control over his companies. This happened at a press conference but he refused to allow reporters to inspect the folders.
Bobulinski did something similar; he showed reporters three cell phones with purportedly incriminating information. He claimed he would hand them over to the authorities, but he didn’t let reporters access them.
Even if Bobulinski is telling the truth about Joe Biden’s knowledge about the China enterprise, it isn’t clear what the scandal is. Joe Biden happened to be a private citizen at the time and not yet running for president.
President Donald J Trump has elevated an unsubstantiated assertion that Joe Biden knew about Trump’s son’s legal and failed business venture. A “crime” for which Trump feels Biden should be in jail.
The allegation is so absurd because even George W. Bush delivered a paid speech in China as soon as he left the White House. Somehow he remains at large.
