Sebamala Richard said that if the European Union has more power in this project, then the leaders in Uganda should be humble. There is basically no need for them to speak up against the EU.
“You need to know the power centers in this country. You may be the head of the family but not have authority. At the moment, who is interested in the fuel? If the EU has more power when it comes to this issue, the leaders involved should be humble. There is no need for Tayebwa (Deputy Speaker) and President Museveni to comment about the EU,” he said.
Last week, the European Union passed a resolution ordering Uganda and Tanzania to halt the project. They cited environmental and human rights concerns as the significant reasons why the project had to stop.
The EU further told its member states not to advance any diplomatic or financial help to the two East African countries.
Museveni however through his Twitter page said that EACOP would go ahead whether with the West’s help or not.
Ssekatawa Ali the Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda said that the reasons especially environmental ones cited by the EU are weak. In his view, it’s just economic sabotage coupled with racial undertones.
He further said that Europeans think Africans don’t know what they are doing and they should be the ones dictating everything.
Ssekatawa added that the EACOP project has been designed with the latest technology. In fact, it’s a smart pipeline that will operate on the internet and has a leak detection system.
