The prestigious football tournament on the continent came to a close yesterday with Senegal crowned champions.
This was also the first trophy that the Lions of Teranga have won in their history in the tournament. They did it at the expense of the record holders, Egypt after a goalless draw that required penalties.
The Senegalese tucked four goals inside which were enough for them to be crowned the champions of the 2021 Cameroon AFCON edition.
The aura has been and is still about the tournament especially in Africa and on different social media platforms.
Raila Odinga while congratulating Senegal through his Twitter page promised Kenyans joy in the upcoming tournaments.
He said that under his administration, the government will invest heavily in the sport starting from the grassroots.
The four-time presidential candidate also said that Kenya’s football team known as the Harambee Stars will make it to the next AFCON edition.
“Congratulations Senegal on winning #AFCON2021. I promise the legion of Kenyan soccer fans that under my administration, Harambee stars will be at the next #Afcon. We’ll invest in football starting with grassroots/mtaani and community clubs. #Inawezekana,” he said.
The atmosphere is getting hotter in the East African country as they head to the next general elections.
The country will hold these in August 2022 as the two-term reign of the current President Uhurru Kenyatta comes to an end. The main battle will be between the Deputy President, William Ruto and Odinga who is the PM.
