Rebecca Kadaga Shuts Down Proposals To Adopt Luganda As Official Language On Uganda Airlines

Former Speaker of Paliament Hon Rebecca Kadaga has shut down proposals from some Ugandans on social media to adopt Luganda as the official language aboard Uganda Airlines.

The idea was raised by prominent comedian Patrick Salvado.

According to the comedian, Luganda is the most widely spoken language in the country. Therefore, he wouldn’t mind if it was adopted by Uganda Airlines as an official language. Arriving in a town like Johannesburg and one gets welcomed in a local dialect would feel amazing.

“Right now, Luganda is the most spoken language throughout the country, I wouldn’t mind if it was adopted as the official language to be used by @UG_Airlines … I’m sure we’d all be proud to hear a home language spoken on arrival in Johannesburg whether you understand it or not,” said the comedian.

However, the former speaker of Parliament said that the cabinet directed Uganda Airlines to use English and Kiswahili. Partly, French is also used for the Bujumbura route. And these are the official languages of the East African community which are not about to be changed.

“Uganda Airlines have been instructed by Cabinet to address the travelers in English and Kiswahili. I have also occasionally heard them use French on the Bujumbura route these are the official languages of the East African Community,” the Kamuli district woman MP said.

This has now generated a wide variety of reactions. Some have accused one another of tribalism while others are okay with a local language being adopted.
