Rwanda Announces Lock down Again After Covid-19 Cases Escalate

Rwanda has announced another lock down after the escalation of the Covid-19 cases. The cabinet announced this on Monday and all restrictions start today, 5th Tuesday January 2021. The Prime Minister of Rwanda Dr. Edouard Ngirente, said the cabinet sat on Monday and agreed that the only way to regulate the increasing coronavirus cases is by reinstating lock down.

In the statement, authorities have put limits to a number of things and stopped some entirely.

“Movements are prohibited from 8pm to 4am. All business establishments including restaurants, shops, markets and malls will close daily by 6PM. Public and private transport is prohibited to and from city of Kigali as well as between different districts. They will only permit travel for medical reasons and essential services. Additionally, vehicles transporting goods will continue to function with not more than two people on board,” part of the statement read.

The government prohited some social gatherings entirely and limited some. For example, government prohibited religious gatherings, wedding ceremonies, receptions, meetings and conferences. It however allowed funerals to go on but with only 30 people or less. And just in case a vigil is to happen, it shouldn’t have more than 15 people.

Authorities encourages people to work from home to limit the number of people in offices to enable social distance and all other SOPs.

Many other countries re-introduced lock downs in recent months in an attempt to contain the second wave of the covid-19 outbreak. Among them is South Africa and the UK.
