In anticipation of today’s Anti-Corruption march in Kampala, the police have taken stringent security measures by sealing off all roads leading to Parliament Buildings.
The closure includes the blocking of Parliamentary Avenue at Kimathi Avenue, while King George VI Street, Siadi Barrie, and UBC roundabout remain accessible only to staff of Parliament and neighboring government offices.
As a consequence of the road closures, heavy traffic congestion has been reported around Garden City. The measures put in place to ensure security have inadvertently caused disruptions to the flow of vehicles in the area.
Heightened security presence in downtown Kampala
In downtown Kampala, the army has deployed armored vehicles and heavily-armed personnel to patrol the streets.
This increased security presence is a response to the youth’s declaration to hold a peaceful demonstration against corruption in the government, particularly within Parliament.
The youth leading the anti-corruption march are calling for the resignation of the top leadership of Parliament, along with a reduction in lawmakers’ salaries and allowances to Shs 3 million per month.
They are also advocating for a reduction in the number of Members of Parliament and for MPs involved in acts of corruption to resign pending the conclusion of police investigations.
Police emphasize maintaining order and public safety
The Police Director of Operations, PSC Frank Mwesigwa, has communicated to the organizers of the march that the police force is mandated to protect all citizens and respond to threats of anarchy and disorder.
While encouraging peaceful expressions of dissatisfaction, he stated that demonstrations in crowded cities and towns that disrupt lawful activities will not be allowed.
NUP leaders remanded to Luzira prison
Several top leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), including Mityana Municipality MP Hon Zaake, were remanded to Luzira Prison.
They were arrested from NUP’s headquarters in Kavule, Kampala, where they had planned to hold a press conference.
The police accused NUP of attempting to mobilize Ugandans for the anti-corruption march to Parliament, an allegation denied by the party.
In a national address, President Museveni accused “certain elements, including some opposition figures,” of collaborating with foreigners to incite chaos through riots and illegal demonstrations.
He warned that if these actions persist, further measures may be taken, emphasizing the need for fairness and consideration among those involved in the protests.
