However, he advised agents to act in accordance with the rules that govern the election procedure.
“Soroti East had a very free campaign process where candidates campaigned with their principals. We want the same to happen in the coming by-elections. We also want to see that agents respect their accreditation at the different polling stations.”
Bukenya said as EC they have already handled the areas that had issues during elections in Soroti. In some areas, the voting exercise was boycotted because apparently, they found the ballot boxes stuffed already.
“We were able to address the isolated problematic issues at two polling stations. We want to engage stakeholders on why the candidate’s agents are getting into conflict with law enforcement.”
Unfortunately, much as Electoral Commission insists that the election process was free and fair, most people don’t.
Opposition insists that if that was the case, then what was the need of arresting most of the opposition leaders who were in Soroti.
In fact, because of all the irregularities that went on during the elections, FDC is planning to go to court to challenge the results of the by-election.
In separate news earlier reported by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, the head of Public Relations at the Electoral Commission, Jotham Taremwa, said opposition in Uganda is only good at being sentimental.
He says instead of pointing out facts, they are always being emotional and playing victim. “My own take on the opposition in Uganda is that they are often more sentimental. They will complain about an unfair electoral process but not point out the exact unfairness. The opposition needs to help the public pin the government.”
