South Korea Boosts Uganda With ICT To Facilitate TVET Learning

The South Korean government together with a United Nations agency, UNESCO have donated online learning  equipment to eight TVET institutions.

The equipment will help facilitate these institutions in the activation of online teaching.

The learning equipment donated include computers, projectors, and whiteboards. They will go towards Bobi Community Polytechnic, Kaberamaido Technical College and Bukalasa Agricultural College.

Other institutions to benefit include Sese Farm Institute, Rwetanga Farm Institute, and Nakawa Vocational Training Institute among others.

Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, an official from the Ministry of Education and sports received the equipment on behalf of Uganda. The handover event took place in Kampala at Imperial Royale Hotel.

She said that Covid-19 has affected the studies of over 15 million learners. This is due to the closure of schools.

‘’This, therefore, means that investment in technology is no longer an option and this support of ICT equipment for our technical institutions is timely and strategic both for these institutions and the nation as a whole,’’ she said.

Based in Nairobi, Dr. Saido Sireh Jallow of UNESCO spoke via zoom. He said while Covid-19 created challenges for the education sector, it has also created many opportunities which Uganda can harness.

‘’TVET is often pointed out in Uganda as a choice for those that can’t go to university, but that is changing,’’ he said.
