Spain 12-1 Malta: The Worst Scandal Ever

Spain and The Netherlands were contesting the last spot at the 1984 UEFA Euro Cup. A qualifying game that shocked everybody was one that took place on the 21st of December 1983, which faced Spain and Malta. At the gambling site 1xBet Ghana it is possible to bet on large football scores on matches from all over the world.

The Spanish disputed the last qualifying spot with the Dutch until the very last moment. To put things in context, there were five teams in this qualifying group, which were:

  • Ireland;
  • Iceland;
  • Malta;
  • Spain;
  • and The Netherlands.

Of course, only one of those teams had the chance to qualify for the competition. Prior to the last match-day, only the Dutch and the Spanish had mathematical chances to be at the tournament. The modern versions of the UEFA Euro are at Ghana 1xBet, where all these teams are featured.

Before this Spain vs Malta match, the latter faced the Dutch team. Here, the Netherlands won the match 5-0. This would leave the Dutch with 13 points in their group. If Spain defeated Malta in their match, they would tie The Netherlands with 13 points, however, the Dutch had a much higher goal difference. This meant that a Spanish qualification looked almost impossible.

An interesting result

Overall, the Spanish team needed to defeat the Maltese by a difference of 11 goals or more in order to qualify for the 1984 Euro Cup. While Spain was clearly superior to Malta in theory, achieving such a difference in the match seemed virtually impossible. In fact, John Bonello, who was the Maltese goalkeeper at the time, stated that he wouldn’t return to Malta if he conceded 11 goals during the match. By installing the 1xBet apk, users can bet from anywhere and at any moment on these high-scoring contests.

Fifteen minutes into the match, Spain scored their first goal. However, and to the surprise of everybody, Malta scored in the 24th minute.

The first half ended, and it seemed that Spain’s dream of qualifying was escaping, as the score at this stage was just 3-1. In other words, Spain had to score nine goals in the second half. While Spain was clearly superior to Malta, scoring nine goals in 45 minutes seemed virtually impossible. For those who believe that achieving high scores in certain matches is possible, the apk 1xBet should be used to bet on them.

However, this is exactly what happened. Eventually, Spain won 12-1. The goals were scored by Señor, Sarabia, Rincón, Maceda and Santillana. Of course, the Dutch were furious, as they missed the 1984 Euro Cup because of this result. Also, there were rumors about Maltese and Spanish players being under the effect of supplements, however, no evidence of this was ever shown.
