Ssemwogerere died at the age of 90 years. On behalf of Parliament, the speaker used her social media platforms to send her condolences to the family.
“On behalf of @Parliament_Ug, I send heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Hon Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, the Democratic Party fraternity and the Country at large upon the loss of a statesman and distinguished leader who dedicated his life to the service of Uganda.”
Ssemogerere led the Democratic Party in the 1980 general election which was won by two time Ugandan president Milton Obote’s UPC party. However, he disputed this election with his DP counterparts.
This triggered a civil war in Uganda during which various political actors, including Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who was by then a Minister.
The death of Ssemwogerere has stirred a lot of emotions among the current political actors including Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine. He said Ssemwogerere has left a powerful legacy that is worth emulating.
“Today is a very dark day. Words cannot describe this loss. Mzee Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere stands tall amongst the giants of history. May his legacy live forever.”
