Stop Lying To People, Give Facts – Gen Felix Kulayigye To Media

Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye has said the media should stop lying to people and give them facts instead. He said this while in the media breakfast meeting at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

This meeting has been graced by a number of media personnel from the different media houses and delegates from the statehouse.

It is at this meeting, that Gen Felix got the opportunity to tell journalists to mind what they publish.

“Journalists no longer care if they get it right. They care whether they get it first. Scooping a story may be good but at times counterproductive. Aim for first-hand info. What you publish first is what people run away with. The correction may not be given attention.” Kulaigye.

Felix Kulayigye says regardless of all this, the media is a necessary partner to the state.

“The media is a necessary partner. Partnership depends on things like professionalism on either side. The public is who we all serve. Government entities must find ways to partner with the media but partnering doesn’t mean coming together to mislead the public.”

However, he advised the media to change their angles just as a lens can choose a focus area on a camera. He says the citizens will always go with what they publish first and the angles they choose to take.

“The camera angle matters. Someone can take a picture from the front view, the other takes a side view and focuses on the stomach. The people say bano balidde sente zaffe. The camera angle you choose builds perception.”
