Authorities detected the drugs on Monday night at around 10:10pm.
“The shipper’s details bore a Ugandan name and the consignment was destined for Auckland, New Zealand. Authorities handed over the matter to Police for further investigations. Drug trafficking through EIA is prohibited,” Mr Luggya said.
He also revealed that authorities handed over the narcotics over to Aviation police for further investigations. For purposes of further investigations, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson said that they withheld the name of the shipper.
“We have forwarded the samples to the government analytical laboratory for forensic analysis. However, preliminary investigations show that it’s heroin which was in packages like coffee in disguise. We don’t have any suspect so far, but we have a lead. Police will avail more details will as soon as possible,” ASP Owoyesgyire said.
This development comes two weeks after the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) opened the Air Cargo Control Unit at Entebbe Airport.
They opened this unit purposefully to detect illicit imports and exports and centralize information sharing systems regarding suspicious and intercepted items at the cargo centre and passenger Terminal Building.
The cargo center is the new office for URA officials, Wildlife Authority officials, Aviation Police and Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA).
