Some of these measures included lockdowns, curfew rules, WHO SOPs like social distancing among other things.
However, Tanzania as a country, under the leadership of former president Magufuli, had refused to accept that the virus exists.
The country never imposed any lockdown and everything including business, public transport among others had continued to blossom in the country.
In recent times, however, Tanzania lodged an order for the coronavirus vaccines according to the country’s presidency. These developments came out on Thursday and this only means that the country is now fully aware and has seen what the virus can do.
The country spent the whole of 2020 denying the presence of the virus within its borders. This even made it become a magnet for Covid-19 skeptics from around the globe.
The country requested the vaccine from the World Health Organization-backed Covax program which distributes vaccines for free to poor countries. This request also follows the death of President John Magufuli in March who had led the country in believing Covid-19 isn’t real.
Magufuli’s successor, and former deputy, Samia Suluhu Hassan has tentatively instituted more transparency in handling the pandemic. she opened up several Covid-19 testing centers and has made wearing a mask in public a mandate.
Tanzania had been one of the last and the most prominent African nations to shun Covid-19 vaccinations. This move now only leaves Burundi and Eritrea as the only holdouts of the continent.
It should be remembered that in June 2020, President Magufuli announced that the country had defeated Covid-19 through prayer.
The government had stopped doctors in public hospitals from wearing face masks. They further forced them to classify Covid-19 deaths as pneumonia.
