Tanzania Finally Acknowledges Presence Of Coronavirus

Tanzania To Resume Publishing Covid Statistics After A Year

The government of Tanzania has decided to resume publishing covid statistics after a year. This was after the president, Samia Suluhu, put together a team of experts. They have advised that the country resumes noting the statistics.

“The government should provide accurate statistics on Covid-19 to the public and the World Health Organisation so that citizens have correct information on the disease, and respect international agreements”.

Unlike the late president Magufuli, Samia is open to this move. During the reign of Magufuli, no media was allowed to publish anything to do with Covid-19 statistics. According to him, this was a scam.

The last time Tanzania published any kind of news about COVID-19 was April 2020. The last time Tanzania updated their figures  was in April 2020 with 509 cases and 16 deaths. From then, Tanzania had been living a very normal life like there is no COVID-19.

There were no restrictions in place. Some people though, have been trying to follow SOPs but it has not been so effective since the government was not involved.

President Samia is however taking a different approach. She says she can’t deny anything without scientific evidence.

“We cannot reject it or accept it without the findings of scientific research.”

Clearly this means in just a few days, Tanzania may have to join the world in fighting COVID-19. All this while, it looked as if they were in their own world. Perhaps the government will now put up a number of measures  especially after republishing statistics.
