Triumph Through Turbulence: Inspiring Journey Of David Musiri At Makerere University

David Musiri, the Head of the People Power Students Wing, proudly walked across the stage as one of the graduands at Makerere University’s 75th graduation ceremony, held at the iconic Freedom Square.

The ceremony, which commenced on Monday, January 13, culminated on January 17. Kato Laban, a former guild minister at Makerere University and an old classmate of Musiri, shed light on the significant hurdles Musiri faced during his eight-year educational voyage at the institution.

According to Laban’s account, Musiri began his academic journey at Makerere in 2017 and encountered numerous obstacles.

Despite being arrested over five times for protesting against a 15% tuition increment and suspended more than four times for opposing the same policy, Musiri remained undeterred.

A warrior for accessible education

In a significant turn of events in 2018, the Chinese Embassy rescinded Musiri’s scholarship after he spearheaded demonstrations against the tuition hike.

Tragically, in 2019, while in custody for protesting fees, David Musiri lost his father. Despite these heart-wrenching setbacks, in 2022, the University Council finally brought an end to the contentious fees policy.

On January 14, after eight years of unwavering persistence and resilience, Musiri proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Laban, in a heartfelt tribute, commended Musiri for his legendary fight for accessible education and congratulated him on his hard-earned achievement.

This year, Makerere University will confer a total of 143 PhDs, 1,813 Master’s degrees, 243 Postgraduate Diplomas, 11,455 Undergraduate Degrees, and 8 Undergraduate Diplomas.

Among the exceptional graduates is Abdul Latif Umar Bagoole, who emerged as the top student in Humanities with an impressive CGPA of 4.97 in Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management.

In the Sciences, Enock Joel Mubiru distinguished himself with a remarkable CGPA of 4.91 in the Bachelor of Science program, exemplifying academic excellence at Makerere University.
