On Wednesday night, Biden was announced to have won Michigan and Wisconsin. This put him within touching distance of the White House. The key states of Nevada and Georgia could be declared in a few hours. This means the next president of the United States could be known very shortly.
However, the Trump campaign has already claimed victory and is seeking to Holt vote counts in battleground states through the courts. This suggests that there will be a turbulent few days to come in the politics of the United States.
The protests;
Dozens of Trump supporters chanting ‘Stop the count’ descended on a ballot-tallying center on Wednesday night to stop the count. Similarly, anti-Trump protesters also took to the streets demanding a full vote count in the still-undecided presidential contest.
In New York, thousands marched past boarded-up luxury stores on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue calling for every vote to be counted. The march was largely peaceful though police made up to 20 arrests after a smaller group became violent.
These protests come as the US election is on a knife-edge with Joe Biden leading his Republican rival. The vote, however, remains hotly contested. Michigan State has already been called for Mr. Biden, but the count is not yet complete.
In a speech earlier today, Biden called for all votes to be counted and said that no one will take America’s democracy away. He also said this will not be a victory for the Democrats alone; it will be a victory for the people of the United States of America.
‘’There will be no blue states or red states when we win, just the United States of America,’’ Biden said.
