UBOS Clarifies: Children Born After Census Night Excluded From Counting

The recent clarification provided by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics ( UBOS ) regarding the inclusion of children born after the census night in the population count. The UBOS has made it clear that children born after the designated census night will not be counted in the census exercise.

This decision has important implications for accurately capturing the population size and demographics of Uganda.

The UBOS has reaffirmed that the census will only consider individuals who were alive and present in Uganda on the census night. Children born after this specified night will not be included in the official population count.

This decision ensures that the census data reflects a snapshot of the population at a specific point in time, allowing for accurate analysis and planning based on the collected information.

The exclusion of children born after the census night is aimed at maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the census data. By adhering to a fixed reference point, the UBOS can obtain a reliable snapshot of the population, which is crucial for effective policy formulation, resource allocation, and development planning.

Including individuals born after the census night could lead to inflated population figures and distort the representation of Uganda’s demographics.

To ensure the accurate recording of births and maintain a comprehensive demographic database, the UBOS emphasizes the importance of birth registration.

Parents are urged to register the births of their children promptly to ensure their inclusion in official population counts for future data collection exercises.

Birth registration not only aids in accurate population estimation but also provides individuals with important legal and social benefits.

While the census provides a valuable snapshot of the population, it is essential to recognize that it is a periodic exercise. To capture changes in population dynamics, ongoing data collection efforts, such as vital registration systems, should be implemented.

Systems can track births, deaths, and other demographic changes over time, complementing the information gathered through the census.

The UBOS’s clarification regarding the exclusion of children born after the census night emphasizes the importance of maintaining the accuracy and integrity of census data. By adhering to a fixed reference point, the census can provide reliable information for policy formulation and development planning.

Encouraging birth registration and implementing continuous data collection mechanisms will further enhance demographic databases and ensure accurate representation of Uganda’s population.
