Uganda Joins The Rest Of The World To Celebrate World Theatre Day

Uganda joins the rest of the world to celebrate World theatre day on Wednesday 27th March 2019 under the theme “Strengthening theatre Industry in Uganda for wealthy creation and sustainable development”

The World Theatre day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). This day has been celebrated annually on the 27th of March since 1967.

However National theatre Public relations Robert Musiitwa says this years edition will be commemorated by different countries under different themes and various theatre events to mark the occasion.

He says the commemoration of this day is in line with Second National Development Plan objective on promotion culture and Creative Industries that provides for effective participation of communities in the development process of Uganda.

“The commemoration of the day provides an opportunity to create awareness to the public on the importance of theatre in development, reflect on motive of theatre and Culture for peace. The day further offer a platform for performing artists and general public to share experience, knowledge and also deepens their understanding of the values of Cultural Diversity and learn to “live in harmony as one family,”Musiiitwa said.

Musiitwa however notes that the celebrations at Uganda National Cultural centre will provide a platform for artists and the public to share the history and relevancy of theatre in socio-economic and political development.

Adding that it will also provide platform to showcase theatre as a centre for productive information on art and culture

Activities to celebrate this year’s World Theatre Day started on 24th with Theatrical performances by the students from Makerere University department of performing Arts. The celebration will climax on 27th March 2019 with more activities like exhibitions and Television talk shows.
