In the third quarter, Alberto Antuna’s charges had a huge third-quarter performance to pull away. This came after an evenly contested first half that ended level (30-30).
The first half turned out so quiet for Jane Asinde after she picked up three fouls that put her on her best behavior. However, she exploded in the second half to score 18 points in the end.
Congo had a three-point lead (15-12) at the end of the first quarter, but Uganda pulled back 18-15 in the second quarter. This helped them level matters going into the long halftime break.
After the half, Uganda scored a perfect 23-15 to begin their pull away from their rivals of the game. They topped it off with another amazing performance in the fourth outscoring Congo 23-17, winning it all by 16 points.
In the second half, Uganda played a full-court press defense which overwhelmed Congo to push Uganda to a 23-point lead in the fourth.
The youngster Lydia Babirye appears to have cemented her place as Uganda’s starting point guard.
She dished out 11 assists and had a highlight quarterback-like pass to Melissa Akullu from her half. She also scored seven points to push the Gazelles to the quarters.
The Uganda Gazelles are looking to another clash with their neighbors Rwanda, the hosts, tonight.
