The move comes as part of a broader effort to address issues related to alcohol abuse and its impact on public health and social welfare.
The decision to increase the legal drinking age was made following consultations with various stakeholders, including healthcare providers, law enforcement officials, and community leaders.
Meanwhile the government hopes that the new age limit will help to reduce the negative consequences of alcohol consumption, such as road accidents, violence, and health problems, Dr Hafsa Lukwata said “ we want to reduce on the number of people who are going to buy. We want to raise the age from 18 to 21.”
However the decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some arguing that it will help to address issues related to alcohol abuse among young people, while others have raised concerns about the potential impact on the hospitality industry and the rights of young adults.
While the change in the legal drinking age is expected to take some time to fully implement, the Uganda government has emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse and promoting responsible drinking habits among young people.
The decision to raise the legal age for alcohol consumption in Uganda reflects a growing recognition of the need to address issues related to alcohol abuse and its impact on public health and social welfare.
While the change is likely to face some challenges and opposition, it is an important step towards promoting a healthier and more responsible drinking culture in the country.
