They were received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials and their counterparts from the US Embassy in Uganda.
The ministry of foreign affairs has informed the public that these Afghans received all the necessary screening to be in Uganda.
“The evacuees who included men, women and children underwent the necessary security screening as well as the mandatory Covid-19 testing and the required quarantine procedures.”
The government has been on the spot because the country was not fully supporting the idea. However, the ministry of foreign affairs has always said we can’t give up the culture of being hospitable.
“The decision to help those in need is informed by government of Uganda’s consistent policy of receiving refugees and persons in distress as well as playing a responsible role in matters of international concern,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Uganda is hospitable. Currently, there are over 1.5 M refugees in the country. Even on this issue, as soon as the government received a call to help in hosting the Afghans temporarily, there was no hesitation at all.
President Museveni accepted to avail space for over 2000 Afghans before they will finally proceed to America.
The government expects more Afghans to arrive as time goes by. However, the only query that has not addressed yet still in the hearts of people is the spread of Covid. As we speak, there is word of third wave already in the country.
