UK Prime Minister To Press Biden To Delay Kabul Withdrawal

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is expected to ask US President Joe Biden to keep American forces in Afghanistan beyond August 31. This will enable the evacuation flights to continue in order to rescue displaced Afghans.

The UK prime minister is set to make his request at an emergency meeting of the world’s leaders from the G7 countries on Tuesday.

Thousands of people are crowded outside Kabul airport. They are desperate to leave after the Taliban crept their way to the top office.

As for the United States Army, they intend to pull out their forces from the country at the end of this month.

President Biden said there had been discussions on whether to retain or extend the deadline. However, they hope that they won’t have to.

There’s no fixed date for UK troops to withdraw

He further said the US troops have widened their perimeter around Hamid Karzai International Airport. This has helped to speed up the evacuation efforts and the Taliban had also cooperated with the move.

UK officials said there is no fixed date for their troops to withdraw from the area. However, they fear that without the US troops on the ground, the remaining allied forces would be unable to secure the area.

The UK has over 1000 Armed Forces personnel deployed in Kabul.

The talks between the G7 group of countries, of which the UK is currently the chair set for tomorrow will happen virtually.

Apparently, the main focus of this meeting is the long-term future of Afghanistan. However, they will also discuss the ongoing evacuation.
