The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) is gearing up to unveil the examination timetables today, September 30. This release is eagerly anticipated by candidates in Primary Seven, Senior Four, and Senior Six, who are gearing up for their final exams.
According to UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule, the exams are scheduled to be held between October and November.
Senior Four students will kick off with a briefing on October 11, followed by the commencement of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams on October 14. This year’s UCE exam holds particular significance as it is the first to be conducted under the new lower secondary curriculum.
Challenges and preparations
As the countdown begins with just two weeks for preparation, around 300,000 students are registered for the UCE exams. Additionally, 10,000 students will be undertaking transitional examinations based on the previous curriculum.
The shift to the new curriculum has stirred uncertainties among schools, students, and parents regarding exam expectations and results.
Schools, especially in rural areas, are grappling with issues like inadequate instructional materials, inconsistent grading systems, and worries about students’ readiness for this crucial academic phase.
Introduced four years ago, the new curriculum seeks to steer away from rote learning and instead focuses on a practical, hands-on approach that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Kalule reassured stakeholders that Uganda National Examinations Board has taken proactive measures to gear up for the implementation of competence-based assessments.
