Uganda Receives Billion Items For Locust Control

Uganda has today received locust control items worth billions from Chinese government. The items that range from spraying machines, back pack mist packers, single use medicine coveralls, disposal medical protective mask and disposable nitrile gloves were handed over to agriculture minister Vincent Ssempijja in Kampala.

Uganda has had three waves of desert locust invasions in Uganda since 9th febrauary 2020 through Amudat and Moroto. These invasions of desert locusts have since spread into 26 districts of Karamoja, Teso, Acholi, Sebei and Bugisu sub regions.

According to agriculture Minister Vincent Ssempijja the last wave of desert locust invaded uganda from Kenya on 16th and 20th may. These roosted in karenga and kaabong districts.

Receiving the items Ssempijja appreciated the donation saying government will make efforts to make good use of the items to contain the locust.

“I wish to register on behalf of government ofg Uganda our sincere gratitude and appreciation to government of the peoples republic china who had our call and have responded by providing material support towards the control of the desert locust in Uganda.the inputs were donated and airlifted by the china government up to Entebbe Airport using Ethiopian airways on 20th,21st and 28th may,”he said.

He added that the items were delivered to ministry of agriculture stores at Wandegeya.

Uganda has previously recorded nine (9) huge swarms of desert locusts in the Northern and Eastern parts of the Country. … The DLCOEA aircraft has continued to spray hoppers and fledgling locusts in the areas of Lodwar – Turkana Kenya as part of the trans boundary strategy to control locusts within the East African region.

Uganda which had been locust-free for close to 70 years was attacked on Feb. … The much anticipated swarms of desert locusts invaded Uganda from neighboring Kenya through the northeastern district of Amudat in Karamoja sub-region and they have since been sighted in about 20 districts in Teso, Lango, Acholi and Sebei.
