However, cluster munitions are controversial weapons that release sub-munitions or bomblets over a wide area, posing a significant risk to civilians even after the conflict ends. Ukraine, however, has not signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of these weapons.
The country has defended its decision to use the weapons, saying that they are necessary to defend its sovereignty against Russian-backed separatists in the eastern regions. rights groups have expressed concern over Ukraine’s use of cluster munitions, urging the country to reconsider its decision and join the international community in banning the weapons.
