Journalism is open for everyone who thinks they have talent to come in and take up space. Journalism is a very sensitive career and profession because it is the eye of the public. If the people who are supposed to be the eyes of the public are equally blind and even selfish, the public will never know the truth.
I mean, they determine the direction of the people through the news and all these shows.
Readers/consumers can no longer criticize objectively. The content in the market is subjective and overly controlling.
It’s time for Uganda Journalism Association to rise up and check the quality if journalists that universities release. Universities are not doing enough grooming, that is why we’re dealing with substandard journalism.
Lack of research
Putting that aside, the research skills are really poor. Journalists have the nerve to release something on grounds of hearsay without even making research themselves. Social media has even made it worse, journalists run with unverified news reports and spread it like wild fires just so they can get a few likes and views on their online blogs.
I think Journalism should be made a professional course just like law is. No one should practice journalism without going through the university for it as a career. It’s absurd for a mediocre to hold the steering wheel of journalism and yet people who are qualified for it, are actually not given the platform.
If content is to improve, then journalists must commit to research before releasing anything to the public. Fake news is more common these days because of these unethical journalists and total quacks.
