During my week in Kisoro before the by-election, the atmosphere was charged with uncertainty as observers struggled to predict the likely victor between Rose Kabagyeni (NRM) and Grace Ngabirano Akifeza (Independent).
The razor-thin margin of 744 votes in the NRM primaries meant that victory was within reach for any candidate with the right strategy. Allegations of malpractice added to the tension, as both candidates were rumored to have employed questionable tactics.
The situation escalated when Dr. Philemon Mateke, the NRM party chairman for Kisoro District, publicly threw his support behind the Independent candidate, Grace Ngabirano Akifeza, citing unfair treatment during the NRM primaries. Speculation arose about Mateke’s true motives, leading to further division within the NRM ranks.
Public backlash against Mateke tarnished his longstanding legacy of service to Kisoro, turning the election into an emotional battleground.
The NRM’s lack of cohesive campaign strategy, coupled with leaders’ focus on superficial engagements with President Museveni, left Kabagyeni unsupported and vulnerable. The contrast with past successful campaigns in the region highlighted the party’s organizational shortcomings.
Akifeza capitalized on NRM’s disarray to secure an unexpected advantage, raising questions about the party’s commitment to its candidate.
Sectarianism threatens unity in Kisoro
Beyond political maneuvering, deep-seated sectarian tensions emerged as a destructive force in the by-election. Ethnic and religious divisions fueled animosity among residents, fracturing communities and undermining social cohesion.
The involvement of influential figures in perpetuating these divisions underscored the urgent need to address and heal the wounds of sectarianism before they escalate further.
Reflecting on the divisive campaign and its aftermath, the specter of sectarian violence looms large, prompting a call for intervention and reconciliation from all stakeholders.
Urgent efforts are required to mend the fractures in Kisoro’s social fabric and prevent further escalation of conflict. The by-election serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of allowing hatred and division to take root, emphasizing the imperative of fostering unity and solidarity moving forward.
In closing, congratulations are extended to Mrs. Akifeza Grace Ngabirano on her victory, with best wishes for her tenure ahead.
As Kisoro navigates the aftermath of a tumultuous election, the imperative of healing, unity, and collaboration becomes paramount in rebuilding trust and solidarity within the community.
The wounds of division must be tended to with urgency, ensuring a brighter and more inclusive future for all residents of Kisoro.
