Eliot L. Engel said the disregard for human rights is worsening in the country prior to its general elections in January.
In a letter to US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, Engel stressed the need for the US to provide robust support to human rights defenders. He said this would be a way to prevent further abuses perpetrated by the Ugandan security forces against the country’s citizens.
“My desire to see a better human rights record in Uganda is firmly rooted in the country’s own constitution. And the legal code which prevent torture. Enshrine the right to freely assemble and express viewpoints that may not be in accordance with those of President Museveni,’’ Engel wrote in the letter.
He also said considering Uganda’s importance to U.S. security interests in East and Central Africa, it is imperative that the US intervenes.
The main reason for the intervention being preventing further destabilization in Uganda. And facilitate the opening of civic and political space.
Major concerns
Engel’s main concerns in the letter included the fact that Uganda is slowly sliding towards authoritarianism. Also, attacks on independent media, banning political rallies and concerts.
The detention and arrest of individuals who pose a challenge to president Museveni. He concluded by hoping for a response to the urgent matter.
Cases of police brutality have been on the rise in Uganda in recent months. This is in consideration of the fact that the country is heading into the general elections.
