On July 26 a military coup took place in Niger, leading to the ousting of the democratically elected President Mahamadou Issoufou. The military junta, led by Colonel Assimi Goïta, dissolved the government and suspended the constitution, sparking concerns over the future of democracy and stability in the West African country.
International community condemned the coup
In response, the international community, including the United States, condemned the coup and called for a peaceful and swift return to civilian rule in Niger.
