She said the national task force and the president has agreed to open schools on 20th September 2020 for candidates and finalists.
Daniel Odongo, the UNEB executive Secretary said until they receive formal communication from the minister of education, reopening of schools is still a rumor. As a board, they have not made any plans in regards to national examinations.
In a normal school calendar, by now the O’ level candidates would be preparing for their final exams next month. As of now the board is not sure whether there will be any papers to write this year.
Where the problem is
Candidates had not yet registered for UNEB by the time the time schools came to a halt. Definitely without registered candidates, who will UNEB set papers for? Currently it’s just 3 months away from the end of the academic year of primary and secondary schools in Uganda. We are pretty sure that time is limited for UNEB to register and also set papers for candidates.
In Kenya, the Ministry of education just decided to call it a dead year. If not for anything, Uganda should have borrowed a leaf from the neighbors.
The truth of the matter is that, the Ugandan education sector is not ready. Not just that, but even the ministry of health came out to say they are not planning to carry out any tests on students. This is very risky.
However, there are a number of questions to ask before schools can be opened; Are parents ready to take their children to school?, Are students ready to go back to school? Will schools be ready to take back the students?
