His numerous disagreements and moderate way of handling issues has seen some of the radical members desert the party for “greener pastures’.
These included Betty Nambooze, Erias Lukwago, Fred Mukaasa Mbidde and their departure made DP perform miserably in the recent elections in it’s stronghold of Buganda.
However, in a recent interview with a local publication, Mao questioned those who say that he’s in bed with the enemy of the opposition. He went ahead to question those that accuse him why they have failed to dislodge president Museveni.
Mao started by addressing the president’s recent comments about foreign intervention. The DP president said that President Museveni is someone that is well acquainted in meddling in other countries’ issues. He cited examples of Rwanda, S.Sudan, DRC and said the president wasn’t right to castigate foreign influence.
Asked about how the opposition can oust Museveni out of power, Mao said the opposition has to listen to DP and Mao. He said most of the opposition figures have high egos which they need to cut down.
They further questioned Mao about how he wants the opposition to heed to his advice yet many call him a regime mole. He said that was the problem of the opposition because when you disagree with them, then you work for NRM. He likened the opposition to pastors who when they have disagreements accuse each other of witchcraft.
“The reason they accused us is because we are willing to engage with the NRM and President Museveni through the formal forum like the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue, IPOD. We believe that it is important that in designing a post-Museveni Uganda, all people deserve to have a say. Those who are not moles; why haven’t they removed the regime? Do they think we will complain if they remove the regime? Mao said.
They then reminded Mao about his promise of leaving DP. This was if they did not raise 15 MPs in the past elections. He said that the elections were not free and fair, the reason they raised only 9. Those who care about DP apparently adviced him to stay. president
The often funny leader said if he’s not Ugandan president by 60 years, he will give it another 10 years.
The former legislator concluded by advising the new leader of the opposition to have humility. The road ahead is no easy one.
