The media house which relies on sexual content a bit sometimes posted photos from the event. This showed several women in skimpy clothes exposing their private parts.
Apparently, this didn’t appease the former Kasese woman MP and she said that there are better things to report about. She further added that she hopes some day Ugandans will wonder why they used to do such crazy things.
“Surely there’s more to report on than events that dehumanize and objectify women for profit. I hope that one day it will be crazy that we ever had such events at all. We can and should do better.”
However, some of her followers were also not appeased with her concerns. One said that the event was about nyash (bums). Therefore, there was nothing else the radio station could report about at that time.
The former FDC chief whip implored Gender Minister Betty Amongi about the issue. Others said that this is entertainment to which she disagreed saying that it is the wrong form of entertainment then.
“If pornified portrayals of women is “entertainment”, why isn’t the same treatment being extended to men?”
The politician further said that the media has a crucial role in shaping and influencing the perceptions of large audiences.
Therefore, with this influence comes responsibility. It is not wise of any media platform to profile women as objects whose desirability depends on specific parts of their bodies and sexuality.
