Previously called One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) it has now rebranded to Africa One Health University Network(AFROHUN)
According to AFROHUN Chief Executive Officer Prof William Bazeyo, the network will collaborate with different Ministries, civil society and development partners across the continent to improve health sector emergencies.
” We shall work with Ministry of health , Water and civil society as one platform and students from different universities to contribute to health work force strengthening in Africa,”Bazeyo said.
Funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) graduates will be trained to handle all emerging pandemics.
Africa One Health University Network is an international network of public health, veterinary medicine, pathobiology, environmental sciences, medicine and global health institution of Higher education. It comprises of 18 universities in 9 countries in Africa.
“The network is working to transform the training environment and approaches in universities in a bid to develop a workforce without disciplinary barriers,enabling students to understand and appreciate the contribution of disciplines outside their own in predicting, detecting and responding to the kind of complex health challenges we face in increasing out breaks of epidemics and complex health challenges,”Prof John Kabasa deputy Afrohun ceo explained.
“We are reviewing curricula, designing new and exciting experimental learning multidisciplinary training programs, retooling teachers and trainers, educating communities on existence and transmission of zoonotic and infectious diseases while engaging national and sub national governments to Integrate one health into national policy and strategic planning, “he added.
Makerere’s University Vice Chancellor Prof Nawangwe cautioned universities across Africa to shun out graduates who can address emerging diseases that have become public health menace.
“With covid 19 in our face, universities need to collaborate and strengthen training curriculum to produce graduates that can tackle emerging pandemics and community research challenges,” Nawangwe said.
“We also need Afrohun collaboration with government in conducting research and designing policy guidelines so that communities gets timely information and mutual benefits,” he added.
