Agnes Igoye, the deputy national coordinator for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs has landed a job with IGAD. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is an eight-country trade bloc in Africa.
It includes countries like Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Eritrea. Igoye made an announcement on Monday saying she will now be based in Djibouti where the IGAD headquarters are located.
Agnes Igoye also revealed that she is going to serve as the migration expert for the IGAD region. This covers eight member states. She also thanked the government for enabling her take on the opportunity to expand.
“I will continue doing counter-trafficking work but this time in an expanded role serving the region and especially with improving opportunities for regular labour mobility. I will be championing among others the reintegration agenda on the free movement of persons for which we already have a roadmap,” Igoye said.
The sociology Master’s degree holder from Makerere University also studied human trafficking, policy and prevention at the University of Minnesota in the US.
Many have described her as passionate about the issue of migration and human trafficking. This is considering the steps she has taken to tackle the vices in the country.
In other news previously reported by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, a report showed that there was an increase in human trafficking during lockdown. According to Agnes Igoye, the deputy national coordinator for prevention of trafficking in persons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the main gear of this trafficking is unemployment levels among the youths.
Most of the youths lost their jobs due to the lockdown that left businesses crumbling. She adds that illegal labour immigration is the most contributing factor.
