These elections got even more interesting when NUP decided to come together with FDC to stand behind Attan Moses. According to them, this move could have been the first step to unity among opposition members.
Unfortunately, to the dismay of opposition, their Unity could not stop NRM’s Ariko from going through.
Herbert Ariko was declared winner of the Soroti East by-election after gathering 9,407 votes, while FDC’S Attan Moses gathered 8,771 votes. Much as there were other opponents, this race has only been intense between NRM and FDC candidates.
However, the win of NRM is still questionable by most members of the public who say the election has had so many irregularities. There have been letters circulating on social media belonging to the EC.
The inconsistency in the time intervals for the announcement of winner has caused many to think the win was already planned.
“The ballots were already ticked though voting was a formality. According to the results from the polling stations, Attan won on merit. Of course, the democracy in Uganda is the military,” a one Munyes Micheal said.
It should be noted that in all the by-elections so far, NRM has been winning them, the most recent being the Omoro county by-election.
