ARUA CITY: Patient Dies On The Street After Escaping From Hospital

Police in Arua City is investigating the circumstances under which Aluma Akbar, a Tuberculosis (TB) patient was found dead on the street. This was after h3e apparently escaped from Arua Regional Referral Hospital where he was receiving treatment from.

Police in Arua City identified the deceased as a resident of Charanga parish, Yumbe town council in Yumbe district. He was admitted to the government hospital from Yumbe as a patient of tuberculosis on June 22nd in the TB Ward.

However, he escaped from the health facility on June 26 under unknown circumstances. This is according to SSP Josephine Angucia, the spokesperson of the West Nile Region police.

“He escaped from the regional referral on the night of June 26th at an unknown time. He moved towards Mvara direction where he was beaten to death by unknown persons,” SSP Angucia said in a Tuesday police statement.

She added that as of yesterday, it was not yet established as to whether the deceased moved out of the hospital bed on a bad mission or due to mental problems as a result of the sickness.

“No arrest has been made yet as investigations continue under Arua Central Business Division CRB 517/2023,” added SSP Angucia.

She further urged the public to desist from taking the law into their hands. The public should also avoid acts of mob justice which are not only barbaric but also unlawful.

She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
