Uganda has different ethnicities which are over 50. And with such, topics to do with these ethnicities are always bound to raise sentiments amongst people.
With some people still harboring parochial beliefs, tensions always heat up when such thoughts are aired.
According to Bobi Wine, Buganda is not a tribe, it’s rather a nation. This is because many tribes were united by the first Muganda, Kabaka Kintu to form Buganda more than 800 years. It’s the reason why everyone who embraces Kiganda culture and values becomes a Muganda.
Bobi Wine even dared any historian to challenge him on this.
“Buganda is not a #Tribe, it’s a #Nation! Many tribes were united by King Kintu to form Buganda more than 800years ago and this continued to the present day. That’s why anybody who embraces the Ganda culture and values can become Muganda. Any historian can challenge me on this,” tweeted Bobi Wine .
This aroused different opinions amongst his followers.
“It is indeed true. From historians that documented the same, Buganda is a collection of ethnic groups. There are 6 original clans.
They were joined by 13 tribes from mount Elgon called Abalasangeye. The first to be installed at Naggalabi. Another 11 clans came from Bunyoro,” said one of the followers.
“Buganda is a monarchy, not a nation. I can challenge you on this bwana Pulisipo,” said another.
“The last time Baganda politicians tagged their politics on Buganda kingdom, our King was exiled and Kingdoms were abolished in Uganda. Stop using Buganda for your political ambitions,” went another.
It should be recalled that some time ago, Kizza Besigye aired the same sentiments. Besigye said that Buganda was a nation that used to have all the functionalities of a state. The same goes for the likes of Bunyoro, Nkore, Busoga amongst others.
The former FDC candidate gave an example of the National anthems possessed by these Kingdoms. However, these nations were combined through force by the colonialists to form one nation known as Uganda.
