Coronavirus Cases Soars, Minister Considers Suspending Public Transport

The minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala has warned public transport operators that the government might to be forced to stop their operations if they continue to disobey guidelines that were put in place to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The public transport operators were advised to only make sure that travelers put on face masks and sanitize their hands before boarding any public transport vehicles.

In the last presidential address on covid-19, president Museveni instructed Boda boda riders to record details of their passengers to enable healthcare workers trace them in case the cyclists test positive for the deadly virus.

However, most cyclists hardly follow these guidelines.

Fellow Ugandans, it has come to my attention that some taxi operators and motorists are not obeying the #COVID19 guidelines in place. With the increasing cases of community transmission, we may be forced to halt public transport,’ Gen Katumba Wamala tweeted on Monday.

This came after the country registered the heaviest caseload in a single day since June 2020, when the president partly eased the pandemic lockdown and allowed public transport to resume.

On Sunday 16th August 2020, Uganda recorded 66 new coronavirus cases, bringing a total number of cases to 1,500 in the country.

Among the above registered cases, 30 are alerts from Kampala, 7 from Wakiso District, 6 from Namisindwa District, ten from Katakwi, Buliisa, Bundibugyo, Moroto, Hoima, Bukwo, Mbale, Buikwe and Isingiro.
