Court Ups Sentence For Witch Doctor Convicted Of Ritual Sacrifice Murders

The High Court presided by judge John Eudes Keitirima in Masaka has increased the jail sentence of a witch doctor from 45 years to life imprisonment for murder.

The witch doctor identified as Stephen Wasswa had been convicted of murdering two children in 2008 for sacrificial rituals.

He admitted to luring the children into a traditional healers shrine, where he strangled them to death as part of a ritual sacrifice. Wasswa claimed the ritual sacrifice was meant to give him powers to heal and make him wealthy.

The court heard how Wasswa strangled the two children after locking them up in his shrine. He then cut off their body parts, including ears and fingers, which he used for the ritual.

The children’s mutilated bodies were later discovered by the police.

In enhancing the sentence, the High Court judge said the gruesome nature of the crime warranted harsher punishment. The judge described the crimes as “barbaric and morbid” and said the witch doctor was a danger to society who needed to be permanently removed.

Local leaders however welcomed the harsher sentence, saying it would act as a deterrent to would-be ritual killers. The children’s families said justice had been served and expressed hope the witch doctor would never be released to harm any other children.
