Crisis Looms For Uganda’s FDC Party: Internal Divisions And External Pressures Threaten Future

The FDC (Forum for Democratic Change) party in Uganda is facing a critical moment in its history, as it grapples with internal divisions and external pressures.

The party, which was formed in 2005 as a breakaway faction of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), has been a leading opposition force in the country for many years.

However, in recent times, the FDC has been beset by infighting, with different factions jostling for power and influence within the party.

However this has led to a weakening of the party’s ability to mount a strong challenge to the ruling NRM, particularly in the run-up to the 2021 general elections.

Forum for Democratic Change party president Mr Patrick Amuriat Oboi said he will today expose corrupt colleagues, two days after a section of party executives accused him of espionage and bribe taking.

According to party spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju on Monday publicly accused the party president and secretary general of being in the pocket of the state.

At the same time, the FDC has faced significant external pressures, with the government cracking down on opposition activities and restricting their ability to hold rallies and other public events.

This has made it increasingly difficult for the FDC to mobilize support and build momentum ahead of the elections.

Despite these challenges, the FDC remains a significant force in Ugandan politics, with a strong base of support among the country’s youth and urban population.

It remains to be seen whether the party can overcome its internal divisions and external pressures to mount a credible challenge to the ruling NRM in the future.
