According to Hon Ngompek, there is currently no opposition in Parliament.
It was the previous Opposition that gave the NRM a hard time due to their defiant nature. However, this one with Mpuuga is so different and hasn’t posed any threat to the government.
According to the NRM cadre, the government has gone unchecked under Mpuuga’s tenure as Leader of Opposition.
“We don’t have an Opposition in this Parliament. Now we are all working for the government. It’s the past Parliament that was defiant, but this one with Mpuuga is different. We haven’t yet felt the effect of opposition in the 11th Parliament. There is no one checking the ruling government in this Parliament,” the MP said.
For some time now, Mpuuga has been criticized for his way of handling opposition political business in Parliament.
The Mukungwe-Nyendo legislator has been accused by some sections of the public for being in bed with the NRM. This is due to his seemingly ‘very friendly’ behavior with the Speaker, Rt Hon Anita Among.
This has seen tensions allegedly rise between especially between the party leader Bobi Wine and Mpuuga.
Allegations have it that there is a rift in the party with some MPs siding with Mpuuga while others with Bobi Wine. There is talk of a section in NUP known as the G-Unit that pays allegiance to Mpuuga.
They reportedly want to topple Bobi Wine and still allegedly replace him with the Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga or Mpuuga himself.
Whereas Bobi Wine and those who believe in him believe that the struggle belongs to the people and to the streets, Mpuuga and his side believe that if change is to be effected, it has to be through Parliament and working harmoniously with all MPs.
This could partly explain why some MPs in NUP have reportedly and repeatedly denied party orders.
