Detained Niger president was ousted in a military coup on March 30 and has since been under house arrest by the ruling military council.
Meanwhile Le Drian called for Issoufou’s immediate release by the military junta, emphasizing France’s condemnation of any unconstitutional takeover of power. Le Drian said that democracy and the rule of law must be respected in Niger.
The foreign minister stated that France is closely following the situation in Niger and is in contact with all parties involved to find a peaceful resolution that re-establishes constitutional order in the country.
He warned that any action by the military council that undermines Niger’s stability and security will not go unnoticed by the international community.
Le Drian said that France, like other international partners, wants a swift return to constitutional order in Niger so that the country can address its political, security and health challenges.
He stressed the importance of preserving democratic institutions and spaces for dialogue in Niger.

The electoral commission released results on showing that President Mahamadou Issoufou received more than 92 percent of the runoff vote.
