However following amid persistent questioning of his commitment to democracy following demonstrations in support of authoritarian measures seen as anti-Congress and anti-Supreme Court.
In an interview with Radio Bandeirantes, Bolsonaro criticized claims that he was threatening other branches of government. “There is no such thing. These are baseless allegations,” he said. “Our democratic system works very well.”
Bolsonaro’s comments follow a series of public displays last weekend, including large rallies in Brasilia and Sao Paulo on Sunday, where demonstrators demanded a military intervention to bolster the president’s grip on power. Some protesters even called for Congress and the Supreme Court to be shut down.
However, Jair Bolsonaro distanced himself from these demands, claiming the demonstrations were focused on defending “freedom of expression, democracy, and support for our presidency.”
Many critics worry that Bolsonaro, a former army captain, could be laying the groundwork for an eventual power grab, similar to how former President Fernando Collor de Mello destabilized Brazil’s young democracy in the 1990s.
But Bolsonaro rejected these comparisons, saying “there is no such thing” as a coup plot.
