Four Suspects In Custody For Robbing Police Officer In Kireka

Four suspected thieves are in police custody in Kampala after a robbery they carried out on a police officer. The suspects are accused of stealing the officer’s gun and attempting to kill him at Kireka Police barracks.

They are awaiting trial while in cells at Jinja Road Police Station. They were identified as Onekalit John, 34, Okalu Sam, 31, Ochaya Oscar, 25, and Mulangaha Hudu, 21.

The assailants confessed to attacking the police officer at his home with a sharp panga they used to injure him severely. They said they carried out the attack on November 14, 2022.

At the moment, the officer is nursing severe injuries at Naguru hospital. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said one of the assailants, Onekalit sustained injuries in the incident.

He thereafter rushed to the hospital for medical care on a motorcycle and the rider later reported the incident to police. The injury he had came from a gunshot wound caused by another police officer who shot the robber while he tried to rescue his friend.

On Thursday, Obekalit got arrested by the police who found a national id belonging to the police officer they attacked. Five live ammunition were also recovered in the same operation.

According to Onyango, Onekalit confessed to being responsible for multiple house break-ins, thefts and robberies in Kireka. He further led a team of police to their black market in Kamwokya where they sell the stolen items.

Police stormed one of the shops owned by Erick, dealing in second-hand electronics, and recovered all suspected stolen properties.

The items recovered include two Flat Screen TVs, five Direct-View TV, three woofers, mosquito traps, a portable fan, seven DStv and StarTimes decoders, and other electronics.
