Caroline accused her husband Muhanji Augustine of refusing to pay dowry despite having stayed together for a number of years and gave birth to 4 children.
The incident left dozens of residents grumbling as it is a rare case among the Abaluyia people.
The frustrated woman believed to be in her 40s decided to untie two of her husband’s cows and took them to her parent’s place within Kakamega County.
When asked how the woman boldly drove off the cows, Muhanji said his wife took the cows whilst he was away on other duties.
The man said his wife irresponsibly took such a decision without his knowledge. He added that even one of his cows was about to give birth, she would have consulted him first.
Muhanji’s dad, Mzee Muhanji Nathan painfully said the act was against Luyia customs for a wife to take cows from her home to her parent’s place.
“It is a taboo for a cow given as dowry while pregnant to give birth at the woman’s homestead,” the old man said.
Muhanji’s father claimed his son earlier took two cows to Caroline’s parents. He was in the process of adding the remaining two before she took a quick decision individually.
Making dowry payments is a fundamental part of marriage among the Luyia people. Anyone that fails to pay it is always despised and somewhere along the way summoned by elders and forced to make a pledge.
